WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines - ENGLISH
In the Level 2 course, you will learn not only how to taste wine professionally but will also gain a comprehensive and in-depth overview of viticulture worldwide. You will learn where wine is grown in the world and about the most important grape varieties and their characteristics. You will also learn about how wine is made and which factors influence its quality.
Practice
The most important facet of wine knowledge is proper tasting technique. That’s why this is at the heart of our training. At each session you will taste outstanding and representative wines under the guidance of our instructors. You’ll not only practise tasting techniques, but also learn about the world of wine. By the end of the course you will be able to taste, describe and evaluate wines like a professional:
- How do I identify wine aromas and where do they come from?
- What is balance and how do I assess acidity, tannin and body?
- What is ageing potential and how do I identify it?
- How do I judge a wine fairly and objectively?
- How does food affect the perception of wine?
Theory
As a Level 2 graduate, you will have completed a proper sommelier training programme. Level 2 is organised by varietal and focuses on the essentials, allowing you to understand the important components of wine without the burden of unnecessary detail. The following topics are covered in the course blocks:
• What qualities of the terroir influence wine style and how?
• What factors in the cellar influence quality?
• The main 30(!) white and red grape varieties.
• All the major wine regions of the world.
• Not only recognising labels, but interpreting them correctly.
• Making sparkling, sweet and liqueur wines.
In addition to the new course book (2022 edition), you will also receive various learning aids and access to our online learning platform. By the way: The course book can also be ordered by non-participants.
Course completion
Your Level 2 course will conclude with the examination for the internationally recognised WSET Level 2 Award in Wines. You will complete 50 multiple-choice questions in one hour, with a minimum of 55% correct to pass.
